Forever inspire and connect people through the power of music, arts, culture and story.

MESSAGE

When you reach a milestone as significant as 90 years you take a look back. Reminiscing on the past can give clarity to your future. For us, it helped us remember who we are and why that matters.

CKUA has always been more than radio.

From the first orchestral broadcast, farm reports and theatrical presentations to expertly curated music and stories of today, we exist to inspire, to educate, and above all – to connect.

With the support of more than 12,000 donors from every corner of Alberta, communities across Canada, and around the world, this year we connected with more people than ever before.  Our audience is growing across generations, and our expanded festival program reached new and loyal listeners in ten  communities across Alberta.

Growth wasn’t limited to just our audience, either.  Over the course of the year we introduced four new hosts, with each bringing new energy, perspectives and connections into various communities across the province.

After two years in operation, the Calgary Foundation studio now serves as a broadcast point and office space for five full and part time staff. Our southern Alberta presence has grown significantly, with 30% of our programming now originating from there.

While 2017/18 was certainly a year of reflection and celebration of an incredible milestone, it was also one of looking forward and of action. Working with our stakeholders, we created a strategic plan focused on relevance and sustainability of our cultural treasure in a rapidly changing world. It is a plan that honours where we’ve been and sets the foundation for our future.  At its core is our mission: to be your hub for music, arts and culture.

Central to our sustainability efforts, we began working with our donors and volunteers to explore new ways of raising funds and diversifying revenue streams.  We began forging unique partnerships, like the inaugural summer music series at McDougall Hall in Calgary.  The first-ever ATB Branch for Arts & Culture was opened in the lobby of CKUA’s Alberta Hotel.

Thanks to support from Edmonton Community Foundation, Calgary Foundation, Rozsa Foundation, Allard Foundation and the Government of Alberta we began work to redevelop ckua.com in the fall of 2018. The new website, slated to launch in early 2019, will serve as our online hub, which is critical to remaining relevant in an increasingly digital world.

During this year of celebration and action, our community suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of legendary musician, tireless public servant and vocal champion of culture & the arts - Tommy Banks. His contributions to the cultural landscape of Canada and to CKUA are beyond measure – neither would be the same without him.

The current media landscape is such that the voice for music, arts and culture in our province is disappearing. Under our new strategic direction, CKUA is uniquely positioned to fill that void.  As we forge ahead on this journey together we are inspired by Tommy’s potent reminder of why it matters: “the arts are the only thing by which we are known and by which we are remembered.”

Cindy Andrew, Chair of the Board & Marc Carnes, CEO

TIMELINE

90 YEARS OF CKUA

Thanks to a grant from the Edmonton Heritage Council, CKUA fans celebrated nine decades of history with a rare peek behind the curtain. On November 18th more than 700 fans arrived at CKUA’s home in the Alberta Hotel for a taste of the past, present and future of Canada’s first public broadcaster. Our friends at the U of A Faculty of Extension shared the story of where it all began: with the realization that radio could offer a more efficient means to ‘Take the University to the People.’ In the early days, CKUA broadcast agricultural techniques, classical music and even weekly radio dramas. Today CKUA is known for championing local talent, so this event was an opportunity to showcase nine Edmonton area musicians performing hits from the past nine decades. Nuela Charles, Jay Gilday and PJ Perry were among those who impressed the audience not only in-studio but those who tuned in to the live broadcast. Fans of all ages connected over interesting artifacts, trying their hand at announcing and sharing their CKUA stories.

FESTIVALS

Throughout the summer, thousands of people gather in communities across Alberta. They come together in a celebration of music, arts and culture. To connect with artists and each other. Festivals are a shared human experience like nothing else. Thanks to your support, CKUA traversed the entire province to bring more festival magic to the airwaves than ever before. On the ground in over ten communities, we showcased the diversity of musical appreciation across the province. From a sunset session with Sam Baker in Grande Prairie to interviewing Shovels & Rope in toddler chairs at a nursery in Medicine Hat, it was a festival season to remember.

STATS

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

Donors remain the lifeblood of CKUA, contributing $3.42 million to make up 58% of operating revenue. Support remains strong, with contributions from both individual donors and sponsors showing increases this year. Rental income decreased slightly due to a transition in tenants and the sale of transmitter towers over the last two years.

CKUA's ambition to engage communities across the province was approached with creative cost control. Audiences enjoyed three times the festival programming this year, while costs remained flat partly due to the ability to deploy resources from both Edmonton and Calgary. Administratively we continue to look for efficiencies, including a consolidation of CKUA workspaces to free up revenue rental opportunities in the Alberta Hotel.

CKUA is in a strong cash position with $2.5 million acting as a buffer to weather the financial downturn while investing in changes needed to ensure sustainability. Almost $1.4 million in internally restricted funds are a result of the transmitter sales.

This year the board engaged new auditors through an RFP process to ensure best value for audit fees and to re-examine current financial reporting and internal operating procedures. As a result, this year's financial statements offer a simplified, clearer picture of CKUA's finances.
